Illustration for the NYT Book Review: The Summer Before the War' by Helen Simonson. Funnily enough the book was set in Rye - a place I know and love. A young teacher of Latin moves to a presumably 'peaceful' village and finds herself caught up in local battles 'where rivalry for control of civic boards is fought with barely polite sarcasm.' Not much has changed over the years! Art Direction by Matt Dorfman.
